From strategy to code production: How does AI help software development?

Vratislav Kalenda

Apr 14, 2026

The software development world changed on February 5th, 2026. With the release of Claude Opus 4.6, we moved beyond simple AI-assisted coding into an era of agentic workflows: systems capable of handling complex tasks with a level of independence that was until recently impossible.

But if AI can code now, what is the role of developers?

There is still a massive gap between a working script and a scalable, professional product. Autonomous agents are fast, but they lack the “big picture.” They don’t naturally account for long-term architecture, security compliance, or your specific business logic.

That’s why the conversation is shifting. It’s no longer about if you use AI, but who has the expertise to orchestrate it safely. The developer’s role has evolved from a line-by-line coder into an architect of intent.

From coding assistants to agents: The big shift

Until recently, using AI in development felt like managing a very fast, but slightly mindless, junior assistant. Developers had to provide instructions line by line, essentially micro-managing every small step. With the arrival of Claude Opus 4.6, the dynamic changed from managing lines of code to managing intent.

Instead of asking the AI to write a specific piece of technical code, we provide a high-level goal—such as “add a new user login feature”. The AI agent then explores the entire project and figures out the best way to build it itself.

This is made possible by the agentic loop, a self-correcting process where the AI acts more like a persistent problem-solver. The agent scans the project, drafts a solution, and tests its own work in real-time. If it hits an error, it doesn't wait for human intervention. Instead, it analyses the situation and tries a different approach until the task is not only complete but technically sound.

While benchmarks show that the technology succeeds on its first attempt about 50% of the time for complex tasks, the real revolution lies in its ability to recognise and fix its own mistakes in seconds. This allows for 5× to 10× productivity gains for a single developer, eliminating the manual trial-and-error process.

How is AI useful in software development?

When companies ask how to use AI in development effectively, they often only think about the code itself. But coding is just one part of the software delivery lifecycle. At Applifting, we’ve found that by investing in agentic tooling, we can achieve 2× productivity gains in areas that used to be massive bottlenecks.

Innovative product discovery and management

Everything starts with understanding the user. We use AI to handle the tedious, time-consuming parts of discovery, like creating automated transcripts and identifying different speakers in user interviews. It also helps us process vast amounts of market research and competitor data much faster than traditional methods allow.

Even the way we define what to build has changed. We now draft user stories directly from interview transcripts. These stories are stored in a simple, structured format (like Markdown) that both humans and AI can read perfectly.

Outlines design specifications

Designers and developers sometimes struggle to stay perfectly aligned, but technology is closing that gap. We use tools like the Figma MCP server that give AI direct context from design files, allowing frontend developers to turn visual layouts into working, pixel-perfect components almost instantly.

High-quality development and architecture

We use AI-first environments like Cursor and Claude Code, layered with our proprietary custom skill frameworks. This allows agents to draft foundational backend rules—like the OpenAPI or Avro specifications that dictate how systems communicate—and implement code to strict engineering standards. Automating this work eliminates the small manual errors that usually haunt integration phases.

Thorough testing and operations

Quality shouldn't be a luxury. We use specialised AI tools for developers to draft test cases and write automated tests that simulate real user behaviour. This ensures that as the project grows, the team can focus on building new features rather than constantly fixing old bugs.

We also use agents for automated code reviews; while a human developer always does the final check, the AI catches low-hanging fruit, like messy formatting or common security issues, before the human even looks at it.

Why choose an AI development agency

Even businesses with great internal teams are turning to AI development agencies to help them adopt these new workflows. Moving to an AI-first approach is a significant shift in how a team operates.

Internal engineers can sometimes be slowed down by established routines or a natural hesitation toward tools that fundamentally change their daily workflow. There is often a psychological friction or a fear that these tools might diminish the craft they’ve spent years mastering. When you combine this with rigid legacy processes, it can be difficult for an established team to move as fast as the market now demands.

At Applifting, we see AI as the ultimate power tool for our craft. By combining 12 years of engineering experience with an AI-augmented approach, we outperform traditional teams on every metric—from story points delivered to say/do ratios. We automate the repetitive tasks so our teams can focus on what actually matters: design, product, and architecture.

Key benefits of AI-powered development teams

By letting AI handle the repetitive work, our clients see immediate value:

  • Faster development cycles: We shorten the lifecycle of complex products from years to mere months.

  • Improved code quality: AI-assisted automated code reviews catch errors much faster than the human eye, leaving humans to focus on high-level logic.

  • Predictable delivery: Because the AI continuously tests its own output and aligns it with a clear roadmap, we eliminate the common delays caused by unexpected bugs or misaligned features. This leads to a much smoother and more reliable development experience.

Does this mean the end for human developers?

It’s a fair question. If an agent can do 12 hours of work in a few minutes, why hire humans? The reality is much more nuanced. While AI is a massive capability multiplier, it lacks the broader context of security, architecture, and long-term product vision.

Naively letting agents build a product often leads to technical debt traps: apps that work initially but fail under pressure or leak data due to poor security practices. We’ve already seen high-profile examples of this—vulnerabilities emerged where private user data was exposed simply because the AI lacked the guidance of rigorous engineering standards.

You still need human experts to:

  • Validate architecture: Ensuring all parts of the app are put together in a way that won't crumble as your user base grows.

  • Ensure security and compliance: AI doesn't have a deep understanding of regulatory hurdles like GDPR or the nuances of protecting sensitive data.

  • Align with business goals: AI can build what you ask for. But a human expert helps you figure out if what you're asking for is actually what your business needs.

In short: Coding without a foundational understanding of engineering principles does more harm than good as project complexity grows.

See the future in action

The gap between traditional development and AI-powered delivery is widening. We believe the best way to understand this shift is to experience it.

Instead of a long sales pitch, we offer a two-week test-drive. Give us a real task—a feature you've been struggling to prioritise or a prototype you needed yesterday—and let us show you what an AI-augmented team can deliver in 14 days.
